Consultant Electrical Engineering Specialist Colin King is an electrical engineer. He worked in the utility business for his entire career, initially in the utility environment and then later in the engineering consulting arena. He has experience in the design and management of the protection of HV plant and power lines and in the design of substations at transmission level. He has participated in the drawing up of cost estimates and preliminary designs and of enquiry documents for a number of solar and wind parks and for the extension to the transmission system required by the projects that increased the generating capacity of a thermal and a hydro power station. He has been part of the adjudication of tenders for a 30 MW solar park. He was the project leader/engineer for projects which costed the moving of three aero derivative gas turbines, that built a 400/220 kV substation, that did reliability analysis at a large power station and defined the design requirements for the Balance of Plant for a Wind Farm and thereafter managed the enquiry process to choose the EPC contractor. He is the project lead for the Grid Compliance studies for a number of solar and wind generating facilities. He worked in Protection Design and Power Station Design, in general management and as an HV and secondary plant specialist. He has competency in power system simulation, using the PSS/E, Digsilent and PSCAD packages. In 2005/2006, he acted as the Project Engineer for a project which installed four 400 kV series capacitors. He drafted the specifications, adjudicated the tenders and gave technical assistance to the EPC contractor He has acted as project leader for the South African portion of the line and substation components of the Aries - Kokerboom 400 kV line. He has been involved in the setting up and execution of a Refurbishment Plan for Eskom Transmission.
